In conclusion, this scandal got the whole word questioning whether our online data is safe or not.
Facebook admitted guilty in allowing the information to be harvested but promised that it would not happen again and that the user would have more control of their data. Since then, Facebook has been working in keep the user data more accessible to the user and giving more control to user decide if their information can be shared and with who it can be shared. (Ma and Gilbert, 2019)
Cambridge Analytica has denied in getting data from Facebook as it breaks the terms and conditions of Facebook. However, the information given by the whistleblower was more than compelling. Therefore both companies got fined in millions of pounds. (Ma and Gilbert, 2019)
This event made the laws on data in Europe a lot tighter then what they used to be. With that GDPR came along in response to this event(if you want to read more about GDPR I have a whole post about it), making our data safer not only online but also in hard copies. (General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), 2018)
